Our Communities
Dominican friars (that is what we call ourselves) live in fairly small religious communities, priests and brothers living together in one house. You probably know what a convent of sisters is, well we are a convent of men. Community life is very important to us, and this makes us different from priests who live alone or with just one other in the parish house. It gives us companionship and joy, and it provides the basis for our spiritual life.
In these communities we pray together morning and evening. Our founder, Saint Dominic, was a man of prayer, and we follow his example. Prayer provides one of the foundation stones for our preaching.
Another foundation stone is study. In order to preach well, we need to know the scriptures, we need to know theology, and we need to know many other subjects that will aid us in our apostolates. Our brothers do the normal seminary studies for priesthood before ordination, but we then continue to study privately in our communities for the rest of our lives. Each community has a well stocked library to help us in the tasks that God has called us to do. We never stop asking questions and searching for answers.
We have four communities in South Africa, in Johannesburg, Springs, Welkom and Pietermaritzburg, but we would love to have more. It is from these communities that we go out and preach.
