50 Years of Priesthood!

Dominicans from all over South Africa gathered at St.Dominics, Welkom on 16th July to celebrate the Golden Jubilees of Priesthood of Frs. Peter Dielwart and Carel Spruit. They were ordained in Holland in July 1959, and have worked in South Africa since that time. Present for the celebration were all our priests except a few who had other commitments for the day, as well as some of our student brothers, our three postulants, several candidates for the Order, and representatives of the Dominican Contemplative Nuns and the Dominican Sisters.

We heard that the two of them entered the apostolic school of the Order in Nijmegen together, immediately after the end of the 2nd World War, to begin their High school studies. Carel was only 12, and Peter 14. Having completed their schooling, they became novices and were professed in 1953. to be ordained 6 years later. Peter will now be retiring back to Holland, but Carel continues his work as Parish Priest of St. Dominic’s. The presence of students, postulants and candidates at the celebration shows that the work begun by them will be continued by future generations.

Recent changes

Since Easter there have taken place a number of changes among the brethren. Father Stan who was previously in the Pietermaritzburg Priory has moved to Springs, to help on the parish there. He has been replaced in Pietermaritzburg by Father Aquin Noronha, who has come from Welkom to be university chaplain.

Father Adriano Francisco Quizembe, a Dominican from Angola, has arrived in South Africa to study at the University of KwaZulu/Natal in Pietermaritzburg.
